Q + A: Healing through Meditation

Something that I have certainly come to discover over the past two years is the profound healing properties that meditation unlocks within the body. Not only have I first handedly experienced this myself within my own body and energy field, I have witnessed countless stories from past clients/friends/other meditators who say the same.

Q: Can meditation heal your body?

From a legal standpoint, I cannot claim that meditation ‘will’ heal you. However, I deeply believe that meditation assists in giving your body the best possible chance for healing to occur. There are a number of reasons for this and there is a lot to unpack here.

Meditation gives your body the best possible chance for healing.

Your autonomic nervous has two basic functions, the para-sympathetic (which is the rest & digest) and the sympathetic (which is the fight & flight). Truth be told that most of us are living most of our day in our sympathetic nervous system - our fight and flight. This takes a huge toll on our body. In our fight or flight, many functions within our body are essentially shutting down. Our elimination system, digestive system, reproductive system, immune system and many other systems within out body, begin to shut down. Our body is preparing to fight or flee. In the long term, this means that our body is not functioning optimally and causes HUGE problems. It’s a fact that stress (and living in our sympathetic nervous system) is a common key factor in 98% of illnesses and diseases.

Meditation is literally the anti-dote to this. Meditation (particularly Effortless Meditation) puts you directly into your para-sympathetic nervous system, your rest & digest. It is here, and only here that healing can occur. In our para-sympathetic nervous system, all of our internal systems begin to work together and work optimally.

Meditation may assist your body to naturally heal itself in the way it knows how.

Q: What is the meditation technique for healing?

I personally believe that Effortless Meditation is best meditation technique.

Short answer: Effortless Meditation.
Long answer: There are many different types of meditation taught all around the world, ranging from more concentrative to less concentrative. All can be beneficial in varying ways. However when it comes to healing and tapping into our para-sympathetic nervous system,
I personally believe that Effortless Meditation is best meditation technique.

For our body to naturally heal itself, we are looking to relax the body and for many, more concentrative types of meditation can cause the opposite of relaxation.

Q: Can meditation heal past trauma?

I speak from experience when I say that Effortless Meditation may support in the healing of past trauma. When we experience trauma in our lives, it often gets stored in our body and we can get ‘stuck’ in our sympathetic nervous system or re-triggered by certain experiences. We can find ourselves reacting in less optimal ways. Effortless Meditation deeply relaxes your mind and body, and slowly over time our stuck energy and triggers are very slowly and gently released out of the body over time.

I personally found that after beginning a consistent meditation practice, I noticed myself being triggered much less and I was responding to situations that I would normally react to. Over time, effortless meditation can help us detach from these traumatic experiences and we can find we are able to view them more objectively rather than being caught in the experience and emotions of them.

If you are thinking about using meditation as a tool for healing (whether it be physical, mental or emotional healing), I highly recommend taking up a course, or finding someone to guide you and hold space for you. Embarking on the journey of self-healing is not for the faint of heart and being guided and directed can allow for a larger sense of ease. I offer a private meditation course which is rooted in the idea that our bodies know how to naturally heal themselves (under the right circumstances).

Q: How long should I meditate for to see results?

The quickest way to see results from your meditation practice is to show up to your practice consistently. I recommend showing up to your practice everyday, twice a day, for at least 20 minutes.

When I initially began my Effortless Meditation practice, after only 2-3 weeks of meditating, my insomnia was completely gone.

I suffered from insomnia for many many years, it was debilitating. When I initially began my Effortless Meditation practice, after only 2-3 weeks of meditating, my insomnia was completely gone. (I share more about my story here in a previous blog post). So you will probably begin to see some results rather quickly.

In saying that, for larger traumas/psychological issues, expect this to take longer. Healing does take time. I was sexually abused as a child, and moving through this trauma was a much larger process than my insomnia. This process was years, rather than weeks.

From the many clients I have taught and people I have spoken to, most (if not all), most begin to see results and changes in their lives rather quickly.

Q: How to heal trauma through meditation?
Q: How to heal physical pain and disease through meditation?

I will address both of these questions together. When it comes to healing, I have discovered that there is only 2 things we ever have to do. It is quite simple really (but this doesn’t mean it is easy).

The first thing is to engage in a daily practice that allows our nervous system to regulate itself - i.e Effortless Meditation. We cannot have any hope of healing if our nervous system is not regulated.

We cannot have any hope of healing if our nervous system is not regulated.

The second thing is: feeling everything unconditionally. Feeling all of the emotions in the body as they arise and allowing them to move through and out of us. Detaching from the mental story in our mind, and actually feeling the emotions for the physical sensations that they create in the body. And if we are experiencing any physical pain or discomfit in our body, doing the same thing. FEELING THEM IN OUR BODY AS PHYSICAL SENSATIONS.

If you continually do these two things every day, you will slowly but surely start to clear out some of your trauma and stuck energy. I call this “The path of the heart warrior” and it is inner work not to be taken lightly. I talk more in-depth about this in my Healing Through Meditation Course and I recommend anyone moving into the realm of healing, to find someone to help guide you through the process. Healing is work that should be done with support.

There a certainly more questions to answer along the topic of healing through meditaiton, however, I hope this blog post has given you a little snippet.
